The Chemistry of Sunscreen

Write a chemistry research paper on sunscreen and chemistry behind sunscreen based on the thesis and outline provided. The thesis has to be used in the introduction of the essay. Thesis: Sunscreen plays a role in current chemistry today due to the constant emission of UV radiation from the sun that causes damage to the skin from overexposure. Sunscreen is used to filter light from the sun to prevent it from penetrating deeper layers of your skin by combining organic and inorganic chemicals. Sunscreen chemicals, such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, are compounds conjugated with a carbonyl group that utilizes the energy absorbed from the UV radiation to cause a “photochemical excitation” to emit longer wavelength radiation that are safer for skin. It is a class of chemical concepts that has been proven to be effective in protecting the layers of the skin. OUTLINE Main Topic: The Chemistry of Sunscreen
Subheadings: 1. UV radiation Define uv radiation and its harmful wavelengths why/how uv radiation damages skin and cells/DNA Long term and short term consequences of radiation 2. Consequences of radiation Sunburn Sun poisoning Cancers → gene mutation caused by radiation leading to skin cancer ( research types of skin cancers) 3. Purpose of Sunscreen/How it Works Zinc Oxide → functional group/info about compound Titanium dioxide → functional group/info about compound How these chemicals react with radiation How these chemicals prevent the long and short term consequences
